World AIDS Day is established on December 1st to help people understand and fight AIDS. AIDS stands for: Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome - it's acquired because it's a consequence of long term HIV infection. Contrary to popular belief, you don't get infected with AIDS, you get infected with HIV, which weakens your immune system for around 10 years, and that develops into AIDS. The stigma surrounding it, especially in the Arab world, is great and uncalled for. Shame and guilt should not be factors. Early HIV testing is essential in helping treatment stop or delay the development of AIDS, and this is the most important purpose of this day.
